Buying House

Buying house is a major decision. The first thing you have to do when you decide to buy a house is the amount of cash you need. This cash is the upfront payment for the property which you can pay with your Central Provident Fund. The amount of cash you have will determine the type of house you could afford. When I first purchase my new HDB flat, the 20% hit me. I do not have enough CPF to pay for the 20% deposit because the CPF money was used to pay off part of the loan to reduce the interest payment. I thought it was a smart thing to do, only to realise otherwise because in the end, I have to pay the deposit with cash.

Useful Tips

1) Cure for headaches:

Take a lime, cut it in half and rub it on your forehead. The throbbing will go.

2) Use of soap wrapper:

Don't throw away the wrapper after removing a bar of soap. Place it inside your shoe cabinet or shoe box. It's a cheap way of filling the air with a nice smell.

3) If your polished furniture has small scratches:

Try rubbing them with a shelled walnut. You'll see the scratches just disappear!

4) Are your shoes smelly:

Here's a solution. Put some tea leaves into a pair of stockings and stuff each into a shoe. Leave for a day or two and the smell just vanishes!

5) Don't throw out all that leftover wine.

Freeze into ice cubes for future use in casseroles and sauces.

6) If you have problem opening jars:

Try using latex dishwashing gloves. They give a non-slip grip that makes opening jars easy!

7) Tips for stamp collectors:

Place the envelope in the freezer for a few hours. You'll then be able to easily lift the stamps off with a pair of tweezers.

8) To keep buttons from dropping off:

Dab a drop of clear nail polish onto the thread the secures the buttons. This will harden and make it more difficult for thread to break off.

2) To avoid hurting your fingers while hammering metal nails into the wall:

Hold the nails with a wooden clothes peg instead. So even if you miss, you won't get hurt.

3) To take the tears out of chopping onions:

Plug in a portable fan and turn it to high. It'll help blow away the fumes from your eyes - no more tears!

4) Potatoes will take food stains off your fingers.

Just slice and rub raw potato on the stains and rinse with water.

5) To get rid of itch from mosquito bite:

try applying soap on the area - instant relief!

6) Ants, ants, ants everywhere...
Well, they are said to never cross a chalk line. So get your chalk out and draw a line on the floor or wherever ants tend to march - see for yourself!

7) Egg shells can be used to clean glass bottles:

Break the shells into pieces, drop them into the bottle with a few drops of detergent and a bit of water, and shake vigorously. Then rinse with water.

8)Don't panic if your soup's too salty:

Add cut raw potatoes and throw them away once they are cooked and have absorbed the salt. Your soup's saved!

Boil them in a pot of water with a few slices of lemon. The fruit acts as a natural bleach.

2)Paper Bags' String:

Before you throw away any damaged paper bags, neatly cut off the strings attached to the bags. They usually come in a variety of colours and are great to tie up little presents with.

3)To get the last drops of ketchup out of the bottle:

Grap the bottom of the bottle and start swinging your arms in a circular motion. Make sure you have the cap screwed on tightly. The remaining drops will be forced to the top.

Yam Cake

To cook yam cake, yoiu must use Thailand yam. It is softer throughout. Malaysia yam is not recommended because the head and base of the yam would be harder. And it is not good for yam cake.

Fried Egg Soup

To cook nice fried egg soup, you must fried the egg first. Once it is cooked, put a lot water to cover the egg. This is called overboil. As there are a lot of water, the oil will surface on the top of the water and you can scope up the cooking oil and the soup will not be that oily.

Dried Chicken Wings

When you deep fried chicken wings, you must make sure that the cooking oil is very hot. When you put in the chicken, they will produce a sizzling sound. That is when the water from the chicken wings will flow out from the chicken wings. Once the sizzling sound stops, you have to take out the chicken wings. If not, the cooking oil will start to seep into the chicken wings and make it oily.

How to select good quality Fruits

Today, I asked the boss of the canteen operator on how to select good quality fruits and this is what she told me:

1. Watermelon: How to choose good watermelon. Check that the watermelon is "bouncy". Do not take it literary by bouncing the watermelon. Slap the watermelon with your hand and see how well it vibrate. The more bouncy it is, the better. Feel the weight. Watermelon mainly contains water. It is usually heavier if the watermelon is juicy. And finally, check the base of the stalk and see if it is completely dry. When it is completely dry, it means that the watermelon is riped and will be sweet for your mouth.

2. Papaya: How to check whether is riped. At the base of the papaya, use your finger nail into the fruit. If it is easy to make a mark, that means it is ripe for eating. If it is not riped (green in colour), wrap the side of the papaya with newspapers, leave the 2 ends open. Then put it in an box. Cover the box with a piece of cloth/sack cloth. The papaya will ripen over night. Using the same method for bananas works too.

3. Honey Dew. Check to see if the honey is ripe i.e. sweet enough for eating. Check the base of the stalk. If the base has just turned soft as if it is doing to rot, that means the honey dew is ready for your mouth.
